Editing Standard SmartLists with SmartList Builder

Microsoft Dynamics GPThe Google-fu is weak with this one (this one being me). I read a post ages ago on the subject of SmartList wildcards which looked like it would be really useful, but then, after I’d forgotton the details, couldn’t find it again no matter what searches I tried.

On the Developing for Dynamics GP blog David Musgrave gives a reminder for those using SmartList Builder that there is in fact a way to modify standard SmartLists by downloading them from here (Customer Source login required) without having to manually recreate them.

When you download them, remember to think kind thoughts of the Microsoft Dynamics GP Support Team who created these SmartLists.

How To Install A Domain Controller In Windows 8 Server Consumer Preview

Windows ServerAt the start of this year I did a post on how to install a domain controller in Windows Server 2008 R2 (and I think the method would work back to 2003 as well). However, with the release, albeit of the Consumer Preview, of Windows 8 Server (Windows Server 2013 on release?) that post is out of date.

I say it is out of date because when I tried to run it I got the following message;

Active Directory Domain Services Installer - The Active Directory Domain Services Installation Wizard is relocated in Service Manager. For more information, see http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=220921

So for those of you who, like myself, are preparing a test environment using Windows 8 Server Consumer Preview, SQL Server 2012, Management Reporter 2012 for Microsoft Dynamics GP 2013 (when it arrives) here is a walk through of creating a domain controller on Windows 8 Server Consumer Preview. Please note this is not a guide that should be used on a production environment; it is solely intended for creating a demo or test environment; I am a Microsoft Dynamics GP specialist, not a Windows Active Directory one.

SQL Server Management Studio Not Allowing Table Changes That Require A Table To Be Dropped

Microsoft SQL ServerI was doing some work with a custom table yesterday and at one point needed to make a change to the table layout via SQL Server Management Studio. However, when I tried, I got the below error message;

Saving changes is not permitted. The changes you have made require the following tables to be dropped and re-created. You have either made changes to a table that can

How To Install Management Reporter 2012 – Client Installation

Microsoft Dynamics GPLast week I posted the start of a series of posts on how to install Management Reporter 2012; how to install Management Reporter 2012 — Server Prerequisites, how to install Management Reporter 2012 – Server Installation and how to configure Management Reporter 2012.

Todays post is the final post in the series on how to install Management Reporter and covers the client installation.

The client installer is part of the same installation package as the server installation (download available here (PartnerSource or CustomerSource login required).

Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011 MB2-866 Customization & Configuration Gained

Microsoft Dynamics CRMI’ve just returned from the test centre with my MB2-866 Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011 Customization & Configuration certification giving me three certs for Dynamics CRM, three for Dynamics GP and the Managing Dynamics Implementations (SureStep) cert.

I had memory problems on Thursday when I left work for the weekend (I forgot to take the USB pen drive containing my blog home with me) so couldn’t get the Management Reporter client installation blog post completed and uploaded; I’ll do that at lunchtime today.

How To Configure Management Reporter 2012

Microsoft Dynamics GPOn Monday the new version of Management Reporter was released, on Tuesday I posted the first in a series of posts on how to install Management Reporter 2012 server prerequisites and yesterday I posted the second part of the series on how to install the server software. Today I’ll cover the configuration of Management Reporter 2012.

To quickly recap, the server configuration I am using is four separate servers, all running Windows Server 2008 R2, but could easily be installed on one machine, or virtual machine, for use as a test system;
Domain Controller (DC1) running the ideal domain (a slight departure from my usual azurecurve) on
SQL Server (SQL1)
Reporting Server (RPT1)
Terminal Server (TS1)

The configuration is done using the Configuration Console which is installed as part of the server installation, so in my case it is on the Reporting Server (RPT1).

How To Install Management Reporter 2012 – Server Installation

Microsoft Dynamics GPYesterday, I posted the first in a series of posts on how to install Management Reporter 2012; how to install Management Reporter 2012 — Server Prerequisites. Today I’ll cover the server side of the installation.

The first step is to download the installation package; Microsoft Dynamics Management Reporter 2012 (PartnerSource or CustomerSource login required).

One thing to note about the installation of Management Reporter 2012 is that it has been much simplified over that of Management Reporter 2; some parts have been removed (no separate provider to install) and some has been moved to the new Configuration Console.

How To Install Management Reporter 2012 – Server Prerequisites

Microsoft Dynamics GPWith the release of Management Reporter 2012 I thought it might be worth doing a series of posts on how to install this version.

The server configuration I am using is four separate servers, all running Windows Server 2008 R2, but could easily be installed on one machine, or virtual machine, for use as a test system;

  • Domain Controller (DC1) running the DOMAIN.MSDynamicsERP.co.uk
  • SQL Server (SQL1)
  • Reporting Server (RPT1)
  • Terminal Server (TS1)

All of the installation of Management Reporter server, and the server prerequisites, will be done logged into the Reporting Server (RPT1); the client and initial configuration will be done on the Terminal Server (TS1).

The prerequisites for MR 2012 are very similar to those of Management Reporter 2 which were covered hereThe prerequisites of Management Reporter 2012 differ from Management Reporter 2 in that only the .NET Framework 4 is common between the two versions. The addition that MR 2012 requires is the Microsoft Access Database Engine 2010 Redistributable to be installed.

SmartList Wildcards

Microsoft Dynamics GPThe Google-fu is weak with this one (this one being me). I read a post ages ago on the subject of SmartList wildcards which looked like it would be really useful, but then, after I’d forgotton the details, couldn’t find it again no matter what searches I tried.

Then, a couple of days ago, Tim Cruickshank, on the Rose Business Solutions blog, posted a few tips and tricks he’d picked up at Convergence, one of which was SmartList Wildcards.
