MDGP 2013 R2 Feature of the Day: Suggested Item Enhancements – Analysis and Assignment

Microsoft Dynamics GPThe Inside Microsoft Dynamics GP blog started a series of Microsoft Dynamics GP 2013 R2 Feature of the day posts the other day. As they did with the Microsoft Dynamics GP 2013 Feature of the Day posts they are doing them as short posts containing a PowerPoint slide show. I am translating these from the PowerPoints into posts; you can find my series index here.

The eighteenth Feature of the Day covered is Suggested Item Enhancements – Analysis and Assignment. Suggested Items were introduced in Dynamics GP 2013 and it is really good to see this feature extended further.

The Suggestion item enhancements allows the user to analyze an item and recommends companion items that should be sold with it. The assignment feature uses the suggestions from the analysis and will provide the ability to update the Suggested Sales Items window at the time of the analysis.

One window has been amended and one created for this feature. The amended window is the Item Maintenance – Suggest Items window (Inventory » Cards » Item Maintenance | Suggest Items button):

Item Maintenance - Suggest Items

MDGP 2013 R2 Feature of the Day: Azure Backups

Microsoft Dynamics GPThe Inside Microsoft Dynamics GP blog started a series of Microsoft Dynamics GP 2013 R2 Feature of the day posts the other day. As they did with the Microsoft Dynamics GP 2013 Feature of the Day posts they are doing them as short posts containing a PowerPoint slide show. I am translating these from the PowerPoints into posts; you can find my series index here.

The seventeenth Feature of the Day covered is Azure Backups.

The SQL backup and restore windows in Dynamics GP 2013 R2 have been enhanced to allow backups to be stored on Azure. I’ve noticed the same problem that MIcrosoft have with backups; namely that people will make a backup of the SQL databases and then leave them on the same server. This is pointless from a disaster recovery point of view as if something happens to the server you have lost both the database and the backups.

But, as of 2013 R2 the backups can be transferred to Azure storage. The Company Backup window (Microsoft Dynamics GP menu » Maintenance » Backup) has been enhanced to allow Azure to be selected as the backup location and a path specified:

Back Up Company

Installing Microsoft Dynamics GP 2013 R2: First Run & First Impressions

Microsoft Dynamics GPMicrosoft Dynamics GP 2013 R2 is now available. And despite not really having the time to do so at the moment, I can’t stop myself from installing it (and as I always do blogging about it as I go).

In this series of posts I am going to do install a stand-alone instance of Microsoft Dynamics GP 2013 R2; the index for this series is here.

Well, with Microsoft Dynamics GP 2013 R2 installed the next step is to take a look at it. Having been reading, and transposing into posts, the Feature of the Day articles from Microsoft I do have some idea of what is coming. But for those of you who haven’t been reading along, I figured I might as well do a short post.

Once you have GP installed and either the Fabrikam company deployed or a company created you can log in. To do this find the GP shortcut on the start screen. This will launch GP where it will prompt for a username and password. If you haven’t previously been logged into GP and created a user then log in as either the sa or DYNSA user:

Welcome to Microsoft Dynamics GP

Using SmartList Designer To Create Vendor EFT SmartList

Microsoft Dynamics GPOne of the really nice new features in Microsoft Dynamics GP 2013 SP2 is the SmartList Designer. This is, to an extent, a cut down replacement of SmartList Builder, which includes much, although not all, of the functionality and is more user friendly.

It also affords the opportunity to all clients to create a report which has long been missing from Microsoft Dynamics GP; a Vendor EFT SmartList which shows the EFT details against the Vendor Remit To Address.

In this post I am going to step through the process of creating this report.

To start, open SmartList (Microsoft Dynamics GP menu » SmartList) and you will see two new buttons at the left of the toolbar; New and Modify (ringed in red):

SmartList

Installing Microsoft Dynamics GP 2013 R2: Adding The Sample Company

Microsoft Dynamics GPMicrosoft Dynamics GP 2013 R2 is now available. And despite not really having the time to do so at the moment, I can’t stop myself from installing it (and as I always do blogging about it as I go).

In this series of posts I am going to do install a stand-alone instance of Microsoft Dynamics GP 2013 R2; the index for this series is here.

In the last post I deployed the System Database so now I can either deploy the sample company or create a new one. I’ve decided to start with deploying the sample company.

To do this launch GP Utilities and log in as the sa or DYNSA user:

Installing Microsoft Dynamics GP 2013 R2: Installing The Client Software

Microsoft Dynamics GPMicrosoft Dynamics GP 2013 R2 is now available. And despite note really having the time to do so at the moment, I can’t stop myself from installing it (and as I always do blogging about it as I go).

In this series of posts I am going to do install a stand-alone instance of Microsoft Dynamics GP 2013 R2; the index for this series is here.

The first part of installing Microsoft Dynamics GP 2013 R2 is to install the client software itself. To newcomers this might seem a little odd, but the client software includes GP Utilities which is the utility used to deploy the system database as well as creating companies or adding the sample company.

To install the client software extract the media you downloaded from PartnerSource and double click on the setup.exe. This will launch the Microsoft Dynamics GP 2013 R2 bootstrapper which will install any prerequisites.

In my case I already have Microsoft Dynamics GP 2013 SP2 installed so most of them are present, with only the Dexterity Shared Components 12.0 requiring an update:
