Hands On with Microsoft Dynamics GP Fall 2021 Release: Add Web Client Runtime Feature

Microsoft Dynamics GPThis post is part of the Hands On with Microsoft Dynamics GP Fall 2021 Release series where I am going to go hands on with installing the Microsoft Dynamics GP Fall 2021 Release and associated products.

I am covering a simple single-machine deployment of the web client over the next few posts; if you’re interested in a guide to implementing a larger scale-out deployment, I have covered this in a book: Implementing the Microsoft Dynamics GP Web Client.

To start, you need a server with the Dynamics GP client installed. To this we need to add the Web Client Runtime. Do this by launching the Program Maintenance part of the Programs and Features control panel applet for the Microsoft Dynamics GP client; select Add remove/Features:

Hands On with Microsoft Dynamics GP Fall 2021 Release: Web Client Prerequisites

Microsoft Dynamics GPThis post is part of the Hands On with Microsoft Dynamics GP Fall 2021 Release series where I am going to go hands on with installing the Microsoft Dynamics GP Fall 2021 Release and associated products.

Before we start on the installation of the web client components themselves, we need to sort out the prerequisites. These prerequisites are all in the Windows feature Internet Information Services (IIS). As the installation and configuration of these is the same as 2018 RTM, I am linking back to the three relevant posts I have previously written:

  1. Install Internet Information Services and other required Windows roles and features.
  2. Create Self Signed SSL Certificate for demo/test system; on a production system, I’d recommend the use of a full certificate.
  3. Bind SSL Certificate to IIS Web Site.

In addition you need to create and assign two domain groups which are used for giving users access to the web client and its web management console:

  1. Web Client Users group which should be assigned to the users who will log into the web client.
  2. Web Client Administrators group which should be assigned to the users who administer the web client.

Hands On with Microsoft Dynamics GP Fall 2021 Release: Create Installation Package

Microsoft Dynamics GPThis post is part of the Hands On with Microsoft Dynamics GP Fall 2021 Release series where I am going to go hands on with installing the Microsoft Dynamics GP Fall 2021 Release and associated products.

The setup utility allows you to create an installation package which can simply the install of a client by preselecting relevant options. One key point to note is that there is a bug where the installation package will always deploy to a GP2018 folder.

As long as you don’t need new version alongside the old, this should not matter too much (and it is recommended that only a single client version be installed).

To create an installation package, launch the setup utility and select Create Installation Package. On the first step, select the location in which the installation package is to be created and click Next:

Hands On with Microsoft Dynamics GP Fall 2021 Release: Install GP PowerShell

Microsoft Dynamics GPThis post is part of the Hands On with Microsoft Dynamics GP Fall 2021 Release series where I am going to go hands on with installing the Microsoft Dynamics GP Fall 2021 Release and associated products.

Another additional product which isn’t widely used, to the best of my knowledge, is GP PowerShell. This alows the use of PowerShell to perform actions, such as creating a new company. To install, launch the setup utility and under Additional Products select GP PowerShell.

On the Welcome step click Next:

Hands On with Microsoft Dynamics GP Fall 2021 Release: Install GP Add-in for Microsoft Word

Microsoft Dynamics GPThis post is part of the Hands On with Microsoft Dynamics GP Fall 2021 Release series where I am going to go hands on with installing the Microsoft Dynamics GP Fall 2021 Release and associated products.

After a brief posting hiatus, I am back to continue the series of going hands on installing the new version of Microsoft Dynamics GP Fall 2021 Release. In this post, I am going to take a look at installing one of the additional products which many people seem to have forgotten exists and that is the Microsoft Dynamics GP Add-in for Microsoft Word. This is the add-in which allows you to add new fields to the Word templates in Dynamics GP; without the add-in all you can do is remove fields or move them around.

Installation is very simple to do, and needs to be done on each client PC or server on which users will be amending the Word templates (not on ones which will only be used for producing reports using the templates). Launch the setup utility and, under Additional Products and select Microsoft Dynamics GP Add-in for Microsoft Word.

When prompted, click Accept to install the Visual Studio Tools for the Office system 3.0 Runtime Service Pack 1 prerequisite:

Hands On with Microsoft Dynamics GP Fall 2021 Release: Integration Manager First Run

Microsoft Dynamics GPThis post is part of the Hands On with Microsoft Dynamics GP Fall 2021 Release series where I am going to go hands on with installing the Microsoft Dynamics GP Fall 2021 Release and associated products.

With Integration Manager installed there are three things we need to do to make it ready for use.

Firstly, we nee to launch Integration Manager using right click + Run as Administrator; this ensures the registry entries are created correctly.

Secondly, we need to enter the registry key; there is no grace period with Integration Manager. After starting as Administrator, a window will popup on which you need to click Register Now:

Prompt to enter registration keys now or later

Microsoft Dynamics GPThis post is part of the Hands On with Microsoft Dynamics GP Fall 2021 Release series where I am going to go hands on with installing the Microsoft Dynamics GP Fall 2021 Release and associated products.

In the last post, I covered installing the eConnect Runtime on a client which makes it available to Integration Manager. In this post, I am going to install Integration Manager with both the standard and eConnect adaptors.

Launch the Dynamics GP Setup Utility and under Additional Products select Integration Manager. Accept the terms of the License Agreement and click Next:

Hands On with Microsoft Dynamics GP Fall 2021 Release: Install eConnect on Client

Microsoft Dynamics GPThis post is part of the Hands On with Microsoft Dynamics GP Fall 2021 Release series where I am going to go hands on with installing the Microsoft Dynamics GP Fall 2021 Release and associated products.

The first of the additional products I am going to install is the eConnect Runtime; this is a tool which allows you to push/pull information with Microsoft Dynamics GP using another tool such as Integration Manager (which I will install in a later post) or other applications which use eConnect.

To install the eConnect Runtime, launch the Dynamics GP Setup utility and under Additional Products select eConnect. Accept the terms of the License Agreement and click Next:

Hands On with Microsoft Dynamics GP Fall 2021 Release: Intelligent Edge Has Been Removed

Microsoft Dynamics GPThis post is part of the Hands On with Microsoft Dynamics GP Fall 2021 Release series where I am going to go hands on with installing the Microsoft Dynamics GP Fall 2021 Release and associated products.

One of the small surprises of the Fall 2021 version of Microsoft Dynamics GP is that the Intelligent section has been removed from the Dynamics GP homepage; previously there would have been a link in the top left:

Home page showing Intelligent Edge is gone

It was added to help drive people to Business Central, but I don’t know a single person who actually liked the page or wanted it in Dynamics GP. I have repurposed the section for a few clients, replacing the normal content with the clients Intranet site. Even for these clients, I don’t think any of them will miss the section.
