MDGP 2013 R2 Feature of the Day: Take Company Offline

Microsoft Dynamics GPThe Inside Microsoft Dynamics GP blog started a series of Microsoft Dynamics GP 2013 R2 Feature of the day posts the other day. As they did with the Microsoft Dynamics GP 2013 Feature of the Day posts they are doing them as short posts containing a PowerPoint slide show. I am translating these from the PowerPoints into posts; you can find my series index here.

The twenty-second Feature of the Day covered is Take Company Offline. This feature provides an easy way to take a company offline in order to perform a maintenance or business task requiring exclusive access. While a company is offline, only the user needing to perform the task and administrators can log into the company.

With this feature, the administrator can also send messages to GP users. Messages can be sent as a task reminder of upcoming events like maintenance happening this weekend or pop-up messages asking the user to exit the system for example.

The Take Company Offline for Maintenance window allows a single, or multiple companies, to be taken offline and a message entered which will be displayed to user’s as they attempt to access an offline company:

MDGP 2013 R2 Feature of the Day: Management Reporter Web Viewer

Microsoft Dynamics GPThe Inside Microsoft Dynamics GP blog started a series of Microsoft Dynamics GP 2013 R2 Feature of the day posts the other day. As they did with the Microsoft Dynamics GP 2013 Feature of the Day posts they are doing them as short posts containing a PowerPoint slide show. I am translating these from the PowerPoints into posts; you can find my series index here.

The twenty-first Feature of the Day covered is Management Reporter Web Viewer. In the previous versions of Management Reporter 2012, the desktop Report Viewer was the only way that a report could be generated.

This new feature allows reports to be generated from within the Web Viewer by users who are in the Administrator, Designer or Generator roles. Going back and forth between applications can be cumbersome, by staying in the web viewer, accounting managers and staff accountants can get the most to date information faster.

This option refreshes the data in the report, using the original Base Period and Year and will only be visible to the user who refreshes the report.

This feature is targeted at the following roles:

  1. Accounting Manager
  2. Staff Accountant

The twentieth Feature of the Day covered is Dashboards. Four new reporting dashboards have been added to the Excel Reports in Dynamcis GP 2013.

The new dashboards are for the Financial, Sales, Purchasing and Inventory series and are deployed with the other Excel Reports. These refreshable reports can deployed to a shared network drive, SharePoint or SharePoint Online.

The Financial dashboard:

MDGP 2013 R2 Feature of the Day: Suggested Item Enhancements – Sales Script and Additional Information

Microsoft Dynamics GPThe Inside Microsoft Dynamics GP blog started a series of Microsoft Dynamics GP 2013 R2 Feature of the day posts the other day. The nineteenth Feature of the Day covered is Suggested Item Enhancements – Sales Script and Additional Information. The Suggested item enhancements allows the user to add a sales script to each suggested item. This script will give the salesperson more information about the item.

As you can see in the screenshot the Item Maintenance – Suggest Items window (Inventory » Cards » Item Maintenance | Suggest Items button) has been updated with a Sales Script field for each item:

The eighteenth Feature of the Day covered is Suggested Item Enhancements – Analysis and Assignment. Suggested Items were introduced in Dynamics GP 2013 and it is really good to see this feature extended further.

The Suggestion item enhancements allows the user to analyze an item and recommends companion items that should be sold with it. The assignment feature uses the suggestions from the analysis and will provide the ability to update the Suggested Sales Items window at the time of the analysis.

One window has been amended and one created for this feature. The amended window is the Item Maintenance – Suggest Items window (Inventory » Cards » Item Maintenance | Suggest Items button):

MDGP 2013 R2 Feature of the Day: Azure Backups

Microsoft Dynamics GPThe Inside Microsoft Dynamics GP blog started a series of Microsoft Dynamics GP 2013 R2 Feature of the day posts the other day. As they did with the Microsoft Dynamics GP 2013 Feature of the Day posts they are doing them as short posts containing a PowerPoint slide show. I am translating these from the PowerPoints into posts; you can find my series index here.

The seventeenth Feature of the Day covered is Azure Backups.

The SQL backup and restore windows in Dynamics GP 2013 R2 have been enhanced to allow backups to be stored on Azure. I’ve noticed the same problem that MIcrosoft have with backups; namely that people will make a backup of the SQL databases and then leave them on the same server. This is pointless from a disaster recovery point of view as if something happens to the server you have lost both the database and the backups.

But, as of 2013 R2 the backups can be transferred to Azure storage. The Company Backup window (Microsoft Dynamics GP menu » Maintenance » Backup) has been enhanced to allow Azure to be selected as the backup location and a path specified:

Back Up Company

Installing Microsoft Dynamics GP 2013 R2: First Run & First Impressions

Microsoft Dynamics GPMicrosoft Dynamics GP 2013 R2 is now available. And despite not really having the time to do so at the moment, I can’t stop myself from installing it (and as I always do blogging about it as I go).

In this series of posts I am going to do install a stand-alone instance of Microsoft Dynamics GP 2013 R2; the index for this series is here.

Well, with Microsoft Dynamics GP 2013 R2 installed the next step is to take a look at it. Having been reading, and transposing into posts, the Feature of the Day articles from Microsoft I do have some idea of what is coming. But for those of you who haven’t been reading along, I figured I might as well do a short post.

Once you have GP installed and either the Fabrikam company deployed or a company created you can log in. To do this find the GP shortcut on the start screen. This will launch GP where it will prompt for a username and password. If you haven’t previously been logged into GP and created a user then log in as either the sa or DYNSA user:

Welcome to Microsoft Dynamics GP
