Can’t Connect To The Management Reporter Server

Microsoft Dynamics GPWe had a call logged by a new customer recently who has just had Managagement Reporter implemented. One of the IT team was trying to get into Report Designer and continually got the message below;

Management Reporter - CanManagement Reporter – Can’t connect to the Management Reporter server. Do you want to specify a different server address?

I’ve seen this error before and it has been one of two things:

  1. The Management Reporter 20123 Application Service isn’t running
  2. The logged in Windows user has not been given access to Management Reporter

In this instance the problem was the latter. The IT team member’s own domain account was configured as a Management Reporter Administrator, but he was logged onto the server as Domain\Administrator which was not a Management Reporter user. After logging out and back in under his own domain account he was able to access Management Reporter successfully.

Management Reporter 2012 Process Service Not Running

Microsoft Dynamics GPI was out on site a short time ago implementing Management Reporter 2012 for a client and ran into a problem with Management Reporter. I could log into Management Reporter, create reports and everything was fine; but I could not generate a report.

When I was investigating the problem I opened the Configuration Console and found that the Management Reporter 2012 Process Service was not running;

Microsoft Dynamics GP 2013 Now Available

Microsoft Dynamics GPAfter what felt like a really long wait, but in reality was to the announced timeline, 19th December 2012 saw Microsoft announce the general availability of Microsoft Dynamics GP 2013 on the Inside Microsoft Dynamics GP blog.

As Errol Schoenfish, Director Product Management at Microsoft, said in the announcement, this version of Microsoft Dynamics GP allows customers to access it either via the traditional desktop client or, at no extra license cost, through an innovative new Web Client presented via Silverlight in Microsoft Internet Explorer. I think the web client is a really good addition to GP with the interface looking very clean and modern and means whether the user is in the office, at home or on the road, they can access information when they need it and in a web client which has the same structure as the familiar desktop client.

In addition to the Web Client, Microsoft Dynamics GP 2013 has seen the addition of more than 120 new features and capability enhancements to the already rich and comprehensive business management functionality; a sample of the new features can be seen in the Microsoft announced Feature of the Day.

Hands On With The Management Reporter 2012 Web Client

Microsoft Dynamics GPThese days I find that time passes far too quickly. Turns out it was on the 14th November that RU3 of Management Reporter was released and I said I’d do some posts on the web client part of it. Well, time flies but I’ve finally found the time to do the post I promised.

When I downloaded Management Reporter 2012 Rollup 3 I did what quite a few people seem to have done and looked for the web client installer within the setup utility. Well, it turns out there isn’t one as it is all handled by the server install. To view a report in the MR 2012 web client all you need to do is output the file to a network location or SharePoint. I’ve gone the easiest route and output the file to a network share.

In the Report Designer, open a Report Definition and switch to the Output and Distribution tab and change the radio button to Generate to multiple report library locations. In this case my report is being output to Library/P&L and if I click on it I can then choose to set a Related Report Link Location which I have set to the shared Dynamics Central location on my server;

Microsoft Dynamics GPYeserday Errol Schoenfish, on the Inside Microsoft Dynamics GP blog announced the release of Microsoft Dynamics GP 2013 on 19th December.

“Our December product releases deliver significant value to customers through simple-to-use and easy-to-implement business solutions,” said Kirill Tatarinov, president, Microsoft Business Solutions. “This wave of new Microsoft Dynamics’ capabilities, together with Microsoft’s innovative social, mobile, collaboration, productivity and analytics resources, inspires people to do their best work and transform their businesses.”

I’m looking forward to this release of Dynamics GP as there ae many new features included which clients have been asking about for a long time. For Partners there is also the mutli-tenant database and web services architecture as well as the web client (complimented by a web client for Management Reporter 2012 that was made available with Rollup 3).

I’ve been tracking the Feature of the Day announcements made by Pam Misialek, and team, and you can read about them by following the MDGP 2013 Feature of the Day tag.

Management Reporter Web-based Report Viewer Announced

Microsoft Dynamics GPAt the Dynamics GP 2013 Technical Airlift in Fargo today a web-based viewer for Management Reporter 2012 was announced (details on the Inside Microsoft Dynamics GP blog).

The demo was done by Jill Carter of Microsoft in front of 400 partners. The new web-based viewer allows allows users to experience the many features of the desktop viewer without the need for a desktop client to be installed.

The fresh, modern user interface of the new Management Reporter Report Viewer will mean users can focus on the data in the report. And, reports are both personalized and secured. In the report shown above, the user has access to the Production and Sales nodes in the Management Reporter Reporting Tree, but doesn’t have access to the Administration node;

Management Reporter 2012 Doesn’t Process Reports In Queue

Microsoft Dynamics GPI was on site with a client last week to do training on various parts of the system, one of which was Management Reporter.

Before the training started, I was alerted to the fact that Management Reporter had stopped working. We ran through a few issues such as the Microsoft Dynamics GP adapter disappearing from the Configuration Console (we re-added it), the Application Service was not running and couldn’t be started (it had been setup by the client using the Network Service and for some reason stopped working; we changed it to Local System and was able to restart the service but I’ve advised them to change both Management Reporter services to a Domain User account).

Once everything was set up and apparently working we encountered the final problem. When we tried to produce a report, it was added to the Management Reporter queue where it remained and did not move to a status of Processing.

I found a website discussing changing the SQL Server broker on the ManagementReporter database to true (and it was set to false) so I did this but no luck.

A little more prodding and poking at both Management Reporter and SQL Server, and I turned up the problem which was actually a fairly obvious one.

The ManagementReporter database was owned by Domain\Administrator. Running the below script to change the database owner to sa resolved the problem and allowed the reports to be processed;

sp_changedbowner 'sa'

Fortunately the investigation and resolution didn’t take a long time so we were able to do the full length training session.

Management Reporter 2012 Rollup 2 Released

Microsoft Dynamics GPI typically like to see rollups come out as they tend to fix bugs and add new features but yesterday I advised a customer to install rollup 1 for Management Reporter.

Hopefully, I can catch them first thing in the morning and get them onto rollup 2 instead, of which Sivakumar has just announced the release on the Dynamics Partner Technical Services team blog.

Rollup 2 can be downloaded from here (CustomerSource or PartnerSource login required).

This one adds support for SQL Server 2012 as well as other bug fixes and enhancements to the currency translation.
