Hands On with Microsoft Dynamics GP Fall 2021 Release: Web Client First Run

Microsoft Dynamics GPThis post is part of the Hands On with Microsoft Dynamics GP Fall 2021 Release series where I am going to go hands on with installing the Microsoft Dynamics GP Fall 2021 Release and associated products.

With the web client installed, we can log into it for the first time and confirm that the install has worked correctly. The address for the web client will be https://{fully qualified domain name of the server}/GP/.

As you can see from the example below, you can use just the server name but you will get a certificate error:

Web client login

Your Windows user account will need to be a member of the Web Client Users AD group assigned during installation for you to log into the web client. Once past the initial login using your Windows/AD credentials, you will be taken to a standard Dynamics GP login window:

Hands On with Microsoft Dynamics GP Fall 2021 Release: Add Web Client Runtime Feature

Microsoft Dynamics GPThis post is part of the Hands On with Microsoft Dynamics GP Fall 2021 Release series where I am going to go hands on with installing the Microsoft Dynamics GP Fall 2021 Release and associated products.

I am covering a simple single-machine deployment of the web client over the next few posts; if you’re interested in a guide to implementing a larger scale-out deployment, I have covered this in a book: Implementing the Microsoft Dynamics GP Web Client.

To start, you need a server with the Dynamics GP client installed. To this we need to add the Web Client Runtime. Do this by launching the Program Maintenance part of the Programs and Features control panel applet for the Microsoft Dynamics GP client; select Add remove/Features:

Hands On with Microsoft Dynamics GP Fall 2021 Release: Web Client Prerequisites

Microsoft Dynamics GPThis post is part of the Hands On with Microsoft Dynamics GP Fall 2021 Release series where I am going to go hands on with installing the Microsoft Dynamics GP Fall 2021 Release and associated products.

Before we start on the installation of the web client components themselves, we need to sort out the prerequisites. These prerequisites are all in the Windows feature Internet Information Services (IIS). As the installation and configuration of these is the same as 2018 RTM, I am linking back to the three relevant posts I have previously written:

  1. Install Internet Information Services and other required Windows roles and features.
  2. Create Self Signed SSL Certificate for demo/test system; on a production system, I’d recommend the use of a full certificate.
  3. Bind SSL Certificate to IIS Web Site.

In addition you need to create and assign two domain groups which are used for giving users access to the web client and its web management console:

  1. Web Client Users group which should be assigned to the users who will log into the web client.
  2. Web Client Administrators group which should be assigned to the users who administer the web client.

Hands On with Microsoft Dynamics GP Fall 2021 Release: Create Installation Package

Microsoft Dynamics GPThis post is part of the Hands On with Microsoft Dynamics GP Fall 2021 Release series where I am going to go hands on with installing the Microsoft Dynamics GP Fall 2021 Release and associated products.

The setup utility allows you to create an installation package which can simply the install of a client by preselecting relevant options. One key point to note is that there is a bug where the installation package will always deploy to a GP2018 folder.

As long as you don’t need new version alongside the old, this should not matter too much (and it is recommended that only a single client version be installed).

To create an installation package, launch the setup utility and select Create Installation Package. On the first step, select the location in which the installation package is to be created and click Next:

Hands On with Microsoft Dynamics GP Fall 2021 Release: Install GP PowerShell

Microsoft Dynamics GPThis post is part of the Hands On with Microsoft Dynamics GP Fall 2021 Release series where I am going to go hands on with installing the Microsoft Dynamics GP Fall 2021 Release and associated products.

Another additional product which isn’t widely used, to the best of my knowledge, is GP PowerShell. This alows the use of PowerShell to perform actions, such as creating a new company. To install, launch the setup utility and under Additional Products select GP PowerShell.

On the Welcome step click Next:

Hands On with Microsoft Dynamics GP Fall 2021 Release: Install GP Add-in for Microsoft Word

Microsoft Dynamics GPThis post is part of the Hands On with Microsoft Dynamics GP Fall 2021 Release series where I am going to go hands on with installing the Microsoft Dynamics GP Fall 2021 Release and associated products.

After a brief posting hiatus, I am back to continue the series of going hands on installing the new version of Microsoft Dynamics GP Fall 2021 Release. In this post, I am going to take a look at installing one of the additional products which many people seem to have forgotten exists and that is the Microsoft Dynamics GP Add-in for Microsoft Word. This is the add-in which allows you to add new fields to the Word templates in Dynamics GP; without the add-in all you can do is remove fields or move them around.

Installation is very simple to do, and needs to be done on each client PC or server on which users will be amending the Word templates (not on ones which will only be used for producing reports using the templates). Launch the setup utility and, under Additional Products and select Microsoft Dynamics GP Add-in for Microsoft Word.

When prompted, click Accept to install the Visual Studio Tools for the Office system 3.0 Runtime Service Pack 1 prerequisite:

Installer for the Visual Studio Tools for the Office system 3.0 Runtime Service Pack 1

Recent ISC Software Webinar: Year-End Best Practice in Microsoft Dynamics GP

ISC Software SolutionsIn our most recent webinar, we took a look at Year-End Best Practice in Microsoft Dynamics GP. In this webinar, we covered how some key points to action or consider before starting, the order in which the year end should be run before running through the closing process in each of the standard modules in Microsoft Dynamics GP covering not only what to do. but also what the year-end closing process does. If you want to catch up on this, or any other, webinar, you can do so here.

In this blog post, I am going to recap the webinar and include some links to documentation from Microsoft which will expand on some areas with more detail. The topics I’ll cover are:

  1. Key Points
  2. Year-End Processing Order
  3. Year-End Closing steps by module
  4. Conclusion

Key Points ^

There are five key points I always stress when discussing year-end closes with clients:

  1. Always have a good backup before starting a year-end close and take another after the year-end close has completed – a good backup is defined as one which you know will successfully restore; unfortunately I’ve worked with more than one client over the years who created a maintenance plan to take backups, but then, when the need came, found that the backups were not valid and could not be restored.
Taking a backup before starting means you can easily revert back should there be a problem in the close; taking a backup after the close completes, means that if problems encountered later in the day that you can revert back to after the close has completed instead of having to repeat the close.
  2. Make sure all users log out of the company in which the year-end is being processed.
  3. Make sure there is sufficient space for database files to double in size; one significant cause of this is that the GL year-end close will copy data from Year-to-Date Transaction Open (GL20000) to Account Transaction History (GL30000) and during this process the data will exist in two places causing the database to grow.
  4. Perform a trial year-end close on a copy of live in test before closing the year-end on live; this will allow you to verify that there are no issues which might require a roll-back.
  5. Once one of the Year-End Closes has been started, be patient and allow it to run to completion. When processing, the close might cause Dynamics GP to white-screen, but this is just a sign that there is a lot of server-side processing underway and not that there is a problem.
