Client Can’t Add New Sales Order Lines in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central

Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business CentralI was onsite doing a small system review for a client recently. One of the issues they mentioned was that they were reaching the limit of the number of rows that could be entered in sales orders, comments and other areas of the system.

I didn’t think there was a practical limit to the number of rows you could add, so was a bit surprised. I asked them to show me an example and they used the sales order window.

The issue was sort of a Business Central issue, but not the one they thought it was. When you enter a word order line into Business Central the data is stored in the Sales Line (37) table, with one column being the Line No.

The first row in this field is set to 10,000 and a second line would be 20,000. If you insert a line where the cursor is, then the row number will be mid-way between the line above and below. for example if I have a two line order and insert a new line, it’s Line No. will be a 15,000.

Eventually, the system runs out of space to enter new lines half way between the lines. They always encountered this issue, as they’d leave the cursor on the first line and click the New Line button.

If you always put the cursor at the bottom of the lines then a new number will be created 10,000 higher than the previous:

This numbering is common to all record types with lines, including comments as well as sales transactions.

In Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central (Administration), how do I… View Two Pages at the Same Time

Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business CentralThis article is part of the In Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central (Administration), how do I… series and of the wider In Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, how do I… series which I am posting as I familiarise myself with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central.

When implementing Business Central for a client recently, one of the users asked how they could view two pages at once. It seems like a fairly basic and very common use case; you’re looking at items and a customer rings up about an invoice, you won’t want to lose your place.

Business Central has a feature called Open this page in a new window which does what it says.

When you have a page open, there is an icon in the top right which will open the page into a new window:

Item page with the button highlighted in top right (second button in)

You can drill down through this page in the new window, but don’t have access to all of the navigation functionality of BC or the browser. It is useful though for splitting out a page that you’re working on, while needing to look at a second thing as well.

The Future of Microsoft Dynamics GP

Microsoft Dynamics GPI worked with Microsoft Dynamics GP for a long time, 19 years in fact, before I decided to make the switch to Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central.

The future of Dynamics GP has been a hot topic since 2008 and the ill-fated Project Green which was a project to look at the feasibility of merging the various Microsoft ERP into one product; despite this project completing fairly quickly with the conclusion that it wasn’t feasible, Project Green kept being mentioned for years afterwards by competitors as meaning the end of Dynamics GP.

Rumours have kept cropping up over the years, sometimes with no basis (such as in 2018 by a Dynamics NAV MVP who said GP had been put into maintenance mode), and sometimes by the words of senior people within Microsoft.

One of the most recent of these were from Mike Morton who, at the Summit NA 2022 conference in October said “There will be no more new releases, and no more new features, for Dynamics GP”. Well, as I’m sure you can imagine, this created quite a ruckus from the partners at the conference, leading to an emergency session between them and Microsoft and leading to a statement from Morton the next day to “clarify” his meaning.

New Functionality In Microsoft Power Automate 2024 Wave 1: Create a Reusable Collection of UI Elements

Power AutomateThis post is part of the New Functionality In Microsoft Power Automate 2024 Wave 1 series in which I am taking a look at the new functionality introduced in Microsoft Power Automate 2024 Wave 1.

The 14th of the new functionality in the Desktop Flows section is create a reusable collection of UI elements.

UI elements are now designed for central maintenance and can be distributed among various desktop flows, as well as among different users or teams. This centralization of UI element collections enhances management, allows for greater reusability, and ensures the dependability of UI elements tailored to specific applications within desktop flows.

Enabled for: Admins, makers, marketers, or analysts, automatically
Public Preview: Apr 2024
Early Access: –
General Availability: Jul 2024

Feature Details

Previously, UI elements were isolated to individual desktop flows. This may have required you to duplicate the same UI element for multiple flows. Now, collections of UI elements empower creators and administrators with centralized oversight and control. These collections of UI elements can be shared among numerous users and integrated into various desktop flows as reusable modules. Consequently, should an application undergo an update, a one-time adjustment to the UI elements collection is all that’s required. This single update ensures all desktop flows linked to this collection within the same environment will automatically reflect the changes.

Power AutomateThis post is part of the New Functionality In Microsoft Power Automate 2024 Wave 1 series in which I am taking a look at the new functionality introduced in Microsoft Power Automate 2024 Wave 1.

The 13th of the new functionality in the Desktop Flows section is use machine to credential mapping in desktop flow connections.

In many organizations, each machine must have a unique user session. This implies that they cannot use machine group. List of credentials will allow them to use unique credential for each of their machines. For organizations who want to use automations executed on agent machines, there’s no option to define a mapping between machine(s) and agent(s). List of credentials will allow to start an attended automation to the machine of the right agent.

Enabled for: Admins, makers, marketers, or analysts, automatically
Public Preview: Jul 2024
Early Access: –
General Availability: –

Feature Details

Allow customers to define lists of credentials and use them in the desktop flow connections. These lists will also allow customers to define which machine(s) can use these credentials. These lists can be used as login credentials in the desktop flow connections and will benefit from the same credential management feature, such as:

  • Encryption and data protection
  • Password rotation with Azure Key Vault or CyberArk
  • Application lifecycle management

New Functionality In Microsoft Power Automate 2024 Wave 1: Self-heal UI and Browser Automation Actions at Execution with AI

Power AutomateThis post is part of the New Functionality In Microsoft Power Automate 2024 Wave 1 series in which I am taking a look at the new functionality introduced in Microsoft Power Automate 2024 Wave 1.

The 10th of the new functionality in the Desktop Flows section is self-heal UI and browser automation actions at execution with AI.

This feature is for Power Automate for desktop users that automate UI and web interaction scenarios. It improves success rates and handles cases where UI elements can’t be found.

Enabled for: Admins, makers, marketers, or analysts, automatically
Public Preview: Jun 2024
Early Access: –
General Availability: Sep 2024

Feature Details

Once enabled by users, the feature uses AI to locate elements in the screen at the execution time. The repaired selector is used in future executions. Plus, it’s optional and can be disabled if you prefer.

  • Self-healing refers to the case that a UI element cannot be found at the execution time.
  • Self-healing can be applied only for UI and web automation scenarios, and subsequently for Desktop and web UI elements.
  • With self-healing, Power Automate for desktop can locate a UI element in the screen.
  • When UI element and its selector are retrieved, a confirmation is required by the user in order the flow to be healed and saved.
  • This feature can be disabled by the user.
