MADIC dynamicsIn our most recent webinar here at MADIC dynamics, we took a look at how to create a multi-company report in Jet Reports. This is a webinar which I presented.

If you want to catch up on this webinar, you can do so here.

  1. Introduction
  2. Multi-company data in reports
  3. Multi-company by columns
  4. Multi-company by sheets
  5. Consolidation sheet using INDIRECT function
  6. Conclusion

Introduction ^

Jet Reports is a third-party add-on for Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central which is widely used along side Business Central. It is popular because it is very flexible, allowing reports to be created against any table in Business Central, whether from a standard or third-party table. It can be used to create both financial and operational reports.

Many of the clients I work with have multiple companies in Business Central and therefore a need for multi-company reporting.

In this webinar I took a look at the way that the Jet functions can be used to pull data from multiple companies into a single report. The webinar focused primarily on doing so using the GL function, but the same can be done with the NL function.

Multi-company data in reports ^

When you build or run a Jet Report the data, if you do nothing to override it, will come from the default company specified in the company selection on the Excel action bar:

End of Life for Microsoft Dynamics GP Announced

Microsoft Dynamics GPIn an announcement which cannot be a surprise to anyone, Microsoft have announced that Microsoft Dynamics GP is coming to the end of it’s life.

Today, we’re announcing we will end product support and updates for Dynamics GP on the 30th of September 2029 (with security patches ending on the 30th of April 2031). We want to take a moment to express our heartfelt gratitude to our loyal GP customers. Your trust and collaboration have been essential to building an incredibly strong GP community!…

I was a part of that community for nineteen years before I decided the writing on the wall was getting too large to ignore and made the switch across to Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central. That swith has seemed increasingly a good choice as I had come to expect an announcement like yesterdays.

The Dynamics GP roadmap has been updated to reflect this announcement:

Roadmap for Dynamics GP showing end of life and end of support

The Dynamics Communities site is hosting an interview with Microsoft’s Mike Morton, VP of Dynamics 365 BC and SMB, where he discusses the timeline for ending support for Dynamics GP.

Microsoft had already announced the end of Microsoft Dynamics GP On-Premises Licenses in 2025 and Subscription Licenses in 2026 which again was a huge red flag in terms of the future life of Dynamics GP; the new key dates to bear in mind for users of Dynamics GP is 30th September 2029 when there will be an end to produce support, product enhancements and regulatory updates and 30th April 2030 when there will the end of security updates.

What does this mean for users of Dynamics GP? Well, first thing is don’t panic!

New Functionality In Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central 2024 Wave 2: Use Advanced Settings In The Power Bi Connector

Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business CentralThis post is part of the New Functionality In Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central 2024 Wave 2 series in which I am taking a look at the new functionality introduced in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central 2024 Wave 2.

The 3rd of the new functionality in the Reporting and data analysis section is use advanced settings in the Power BI connector.

Advanced users of Power Query can now fine-tune the use of the Power BI connector for Business Central in their semantic models. The introduction of new parameters to the Power BI connector for Business Central enhances the flexibility, performance, and user experience of data integration and analysis, while still ensuring the default values are optimal in the majority of cases. These parameters empower users with more control over their data interactions, leading to more efficient data processing, better performance, and an improved user experience.

Enabled for: Users by admins, makers, or analysts
Public Preview: –
General Availability: Oct 2024

Feature Details

Starting in this release, the Power BI connector for Business Central now supports several advanced properties that you can set in your Power Query queries:

  • AcceptLanguage: This parameter allows you to specify preferred languages for responses, ensuring users receive messages and translatable strings in their desired language. This improves user satisfaction and makes the data more accessible and relevant.
  • ODataMaxPageSize: By limiting the number of entities per results page, this parameter allows for more flexibility when connecting to large datasets or using complex queries. It ensures efficient and responsive data retrieval, leading to faster insights and decision-making. You can’t exceed the maximum page size defined on the service.
  • Timeout: This parameter defines the maximum duration for a request before cancellation. It helps manage system resources effectively and prevents long-running queries from impacting overall system performance. Users experience minimal delays and interruptions, ensuring a smoother workflow. You can’t exceed the timeout defined on the service.
  • UseReadOnlyReplica: This parameter determines whether requests target the primary database or a read-only replica. Offloading read operations from the primary database can significantly boost performance. This leads to faster data retrieval and improved system stability, especially during peak usage times.

New Functionality In Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central 2024 Wave 2: Do Ad Hoc Analysis On Fixed Assets, Projects, And Services

The 2nd of the new functionality in the Reporting and data analysis section is do ad hoc analysis on fixed assets, projects, and services.

Do reporting and ad hoc data analysis on transactions from fixed assets, projects, and service management: group, summarize, and pivot data to give you the insights you need without the need to run a report.

Enabled for: Users, automatically
Public Preview: –
General Availability: Oct 2024

Feature Details

In 2023 release wave 2, we introduced the ability to do data analysis on an AL query. Now, 2024 release wave 2 has out-of-the-box queries designed to make ad hoc analysis easier for fixed assets, projects, and services.

Many of the first examples are ledger entry tables (such as fixed assets ledger entries or project ledger entries) joined to relevant tables (typically the tables where a code field on the ledger can be joined) where additional fields can enrich the analysis scenarios that people typically do on ledger entry list pages.
Example: fixed assets ad hoc analysis

The fixed assets ad hoc analysis query joins data from fixed asset ledger entries to master data tables, such as the Fixed Asset, Fixed Asset Class, Fixed Asset Subclass, Fixed Asset Location, and Depreciation Book tables.

When you open the query in the Business Central client, you can slice and dice data about fixed assets any way you like. The following image shows the options that are available.
