Error Posting Fixed Asset Write-Down In Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central

Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business CentralI was asked to deliver a training workshop to users at a client on the Fixed Assets module. Prior to the session, I logged on and gave te module a quick run through of the areas I would be covering, to make sure that everything worked correctly.

I encountered one error when trying to post a write-down; unfortunately I forgot to take a screenshot of the error as it happened, but the error message is shown below verbatim:

FA Posting Type Write-Down must be posted in the FA journal in Gen. Journal Line Journal Template Name='DEFAULT',Line No.='12000'

I was trying to post the write-down journal so the message wasn’t especially helpful in telling me that the write-down must be posted. I did a little checking and realised that on the Depreciation Book Card, the G/L Integration – Write-Down toggle was not enabled.

Once I enabled this setting I was able to post the write-down journal without any further problem:

New Functionality In Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central 2023 Wave 2: Adjust Exchange Rates Easily, Replace the Built-in Batch Job

Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business CentralThis post is part of the New Functionality In Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central 2023 Wave 2 series in which I am taking a look at the new functionality introduced in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central 2023 Wave 2.

The sixteenth of the new functionality in the Application section is Adjust exchange rates easily, replace the built-in batch job.

When companies operate in multiple countries or regions, it’s important that they can do business and run financial reports in more than one currency. Because exchange rates often change, businesses must periodically update the rates in Business Central. This update gives accountants additional control over how they adjust exchange rates. At the same time, partners can now extend and customize the exchange rate adjustment to meet the needs of specific industries or markets.

Enabled for: Users by admins, makers, or analysts
Public Preview: Sep 2023
General Availability: Oct 2023

Feature Details

You can now preview the effect that an exchange rate adjustment will have on posting before you actually post by choosing the Preview Posting action on the Exch. Rates Adjustment report (Report 596) request page. Specify whether you want a detailed posting to the general ledger by entry, or a summarized posting by currency, by using the Adjust per entry field. You can also specify how the adjustment will handle dimensions for unrealized gains and losses postings by choosing one of the following options in the Dimension Posting field:

  • Source Entry Dimensions: G/L entries for unrealized gains and losses will have dimensions values transferred from the entry you’re adjusting.
  • No Dimensions: G/L entries for unrealized gains and losses won’t have dimensions values.
  • G/L Account Dimensions: G/L entries for unrealized gains and losses will have dimensions values transferred from the unrealized gains and losses G/L account’s dimension settings source entry.
Shows new Exchange Rates Adjustment report request page.

New Functionality In Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central 2023 Wave 2: Include Only Open Entries on Customer Statements

The fifteenth of the new functionality in the Application section is Include only open entries on customer statements.

Businesses send customer statements to customers in various formats and for various purposes. Microsoft have added a Statement Style field so that you can include only open entries in the report.

Enabled for: Users, automatically
Public Preview: Sep 2023
General Availability: Oct 2023

Feature Details

If you open the Customer Statement report from the Customers list page or the role explorer, you’ll find the following options in the Statement Style field on the request page:

  • Balance gives customers an overview of outstanding amounts and a reminder to pay amounts that are overdue.
  • Open Items does the following:
    • Shows only open entries within the specified date range.
    • Shows a balance for open entries before the start date.
    • Ignores entries that have a posting date that’s after the ending date.
Statement in Open Items style, with totals per currency

My Opinion

While statements are usually produced showing all activity in a specified period, I can see producing one only of open entries would be very useful from a credit control point of view, allowing you to send a statement to a customer of all invoices yet to be paid.

In Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central (Inventory and Warehouse Management), how do I… Process an Inventory Pick Document

Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business CentralThis post is part of the In Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central (Inventory and Warehouse Management), how do I… series and of the wider In Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, how do I… series which I am posting as I familiarise myself with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central.

In a previous article of this series on understanding inventory picks, I mentioned there was three ways in which an inventory pick could be processed and which I covered over the last few articles:

  1. Process an Inventory Pick from the Source Document
  2. Process Multiple Inventory Picks Using a Batch Job
  3. Process an Inventory Pick in Two Steps by Releasing the Source Document

Once the inventory pick activities have been created, they need to be procssed. Do this by performing a search for Inventory Picks and, from the list page which opens, select one of the activities:

New Functionality In Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central 2023 Wave 2: Relate Native and Virtual Tables to Expose More Business Central Data in Dataverse

The twelfth of the new functionality in the Adapt faster with Power Platform section is Relate native and virtual tables to expose more Business Central data in Dataverse.

Virtual tables and the data synchronization way of integrating Business Central to Dataverse and Dynamics 365 apps enhance the value of your Dynamics 365 investment by erasing boundaries between Dynamics 365 apps and making your data accessible to users in their preferred app.

Enabled for: Users by admins, makers, or analysts
Public Preview: Oct 2023
General Availability: Nov 2023

Feature Details

You can now create a relationship between native and virtual tables in Business Central. When you synchronize data between Business Central and Dataverse, data is transferred between the tables. Adding a relationship between a synchronized entity and a virtual table enables you to enrich the data coming from Business Central without help from a developer.

My Opinion

Not an area I’ve done anything with, but like a number of the other changes in the Adapt faster with Power Platform area of new features, I can see that this could be useful.

New Functionality In Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central 2023 Wave 2: Business Central Virtual Tables Fully Supported on Microsoft Dataverse

The eleventh of the new functionality in the Adapt faster with Power Platform section is Business Central virtual tables fully supported on Microsoft Dataverse.

Business Central virtual tables allow for inbound interactions from apps, flows, and pages running on Microsoft Dataverse to perform create, read, update, and delete (CRUD) operations on Business Central physical tables without the need to replicate data into Dataverse.

Enabled for: Users by admins, makers, or analysts
Public Preview: –
General Availability: Nov 2023

Feature Details

With Business Central virtual tables, your apps, flows, and pages built using Power Apps, Power Automate, and Power Pages on Power Platform can easily interact with Business Central physical tables. Synthetic relations can be created between native Dataverse tables and Business Central virtual tables, allowing related data to be presented together on Power Apps and Power Pages.

Additionally, changes made to Business Central physical tables can trigger outbound interactions from Business Central into Dataverse by emitting create, update, and delete (CUD) events that start Power Automate flows with the When a row is added, modified, or deleted trigger set to the corresponding Business Central virtual tables.

How To Install Microsoft SQL Server 2022: Download SQL Server Reporting Services

Microsoft SQL ServerThis article is part of the series on How To Install Microsoft SQL Server 2022; I do not claim to be an expert on SQL Server and this series is installing SQL Server in a development/testing/demo environment. If you’re installing SQL into a production environment there will be additional work required to harden the SQL Server and avoid security issues.

SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) is, like SQL Server Management Services (SSMS), another feature of SQL Server which was split out into a separate download, but SSRS, unlike SSMS, is tied to a specific version of SQL Server, so the correct version needs to be downloaded.

The latest version of SSRS for SQL Server 2022 is available to download here (you can toggle the Version drop-down list for older versions of SQL Server):

New Functionality In Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central 2023 Wave 2: Create Power Automate Flows that Dynamically Support Different Companies

The tenth of the new functionality in the Adapt faster with Power Platform section is Create Power Automate flows that dynamically support different companies.

Building Power Automate flows that are easily portable and work with multiple companies helps partners and consultants use Power Platform when adapting Business Central to the needs of small and medium-sized businesses.

Enabled for: Admins, makers, marketers, or analysts, automatically
Public Preview: Sep 2023
General Availability: Oct 2023

Feature Details

This feature provides the following capabilities to Power Automate makers as they create or edit flows:

  • Access to a list of API categories and APIs/tables in all actions—without even specifying a company.
  • Edit the corresponding flow steps with all metadata details even though no company was provided.
  • Use of Dataverse environment variables for environments and companies.
  • Support for application lifecycle management (ALM) with Dataverse environment variables in AL-Go for GitHub.
  • Use a standard variable for company ID and make flows that can run in the context of different companies.
  • Use the output of the new List Companies action to perform actions or read data across companies.
Business Central connector supporting dynamic values for companies

My Opinion

I need to do some exploring of the new features outlined above, but on the surface they sound like they will be very useful.

The first item, access to the list of API categories and tables without selecting a company will resolve an irritation, where at present you have to explicitly select the environment and company to see the lists. This is annoying for a flow which could be run against any company, meaning you need to pick the environment and company to select from the API and then remove them and set back to the variables. This change means this won’t need to be done.

New Functionality In Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central 2023 Wave 2: Simplified Power Automate Approval Flow Experience

The ninth of the new functionality in the Adapt faster with Power Platform section is Simplified Power Automate approval flow experience.

Approving documents or data changes in a modern company must be straightforward. Microsoft listen to feedback and continue to improve this area, making sure this experience matches business users’ expectations.

Enabled for: Users, automatically
Public Preview: Sep 2023
General Availability: Oct 2023

Feature Details

In the previous release, Microsoft have introduced several new templates and a simplified approval experience based on Power Automate. With this wave, Microsoft have improved this area by introducing several new changes:

  • Microsoft automatically set the environment and company in approval templates so that the user doesn’t need to choose those every time.
  • Microsoft have added the requestor to the request for approval and confirmation emails, making it clear who requested and who approved the change.
  • The Approval step in Microsoft’s templates now includes “Requested by” to indicate the proper requestor.
  • Correctly handle the “cancel approval request” decision on the Power Automate side.
  • An optional adaptive card can be posted to a chosen Teams channel (or user) with information that a given document was approved.

My Opinion

These changes all look to be very useful ones. I’ve been doing work with some clients recently on approval workflows from Business Central and these changes will be useful as we move forward into the build phase for the project.

The fourth item in the list looks particularly important to make sure that data isn’t corrupted, while the second and third expose additional information to the approval requests.
