This post is part of the In Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central (Administration), how do I… series and of the wider In Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, how do I… series which I am posting as I familiarise myself with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central.
Each page in Dynamics BC has a different set of actions depending on the page type, and the processes that the page supports. These actions are contained within the action bar.
Actions on the action bar are often grouped together into similar types where clicking an action opens a second action bar with the grouped actions, or a drop down list is displayed.
I’ve worked with Dynamics BC for only a short time, but have already seen changes to the action bar introduced into 2022 Wave 2 in the form of a “modern action bar”. When I’ve been working with Dynamics BC, I find myself searching thrugh eus looking for the option I want, but have also noticed that consultants with many years of experience with Dynamics BC are also spending time searching through thru action bar. I believe this is a result of the constant changes that Microsoft have made; a further issue for consultants is that we often work with clients on multiple versions so don’t have a static system which they’re always using.
One thing I have found to be quite useful is the Tell me what you want to do… search option which searches within the open page.
For example, if I was working on a vendor card and wanted to edit the linked dimensions, I can either find it manually on the card’s action bar, or I can search for it and access it from search:
The only thing to watch out for when searching for an action on a page, is to make sure you select the required option from the correct part of the search results. As the above screenshot shows, there are two results for dimensions. The top result is the one on the vendor card and the second the main Dimension maintenance window in Dynamics BC.
