New Functionality In Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central 2022 Wave 2: Find Posted and Non-Posted Document Lines in Search

Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business CentralThis post is part of the New Functionality In Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central 2022 Wave 2 series in which I am taking a look at the new functionality introduced in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central 2022 Wave 2.

The fourth of the new functionality in the application section is find posted and non-posted document lines in search.

Pages with document lines are often used for specific analysis. Now you can be more productive by finding them through the in-product search field and bookmark links to the documents on your home page for easy access to the original or a filtered view.

Enabled for: users, automatically
General Availability: October 2022

In the in-product search field, you can search for the following pages, grouped here by document type.

Posted documents:

  • Posted Purchase Invoice Lines (page 529)
  • Posted Purchase Receipt Lines (page 528)
  • Posted Purchase Cr. Memo Lines (page 530)
  • Posted Sales Invoice Lines (page 526)
  • Posted Sales Shipment Lines (page 525)
  • Posted Sales Credit Memo Lines (page 527)

Open documents:

  • Purchase Lines (page 518)
  • Sales Lines (page 516)

And if you have a premium license:

  • Prod. Order Comp. Lines (page 5407)

You can bookmark pages from the search results to add them to your home page.

You can also add one or more views with predefined filters and sorting.

Tell me what you want to do search for 'posted lines'

My opinion

Anything which can assist with discoverability and speed of finding things is a good addition.

New Functionality In Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central 2022 Wave 2: Financial Reporting Replaces Account Schedules

The third of the new functionality in the application section is financial reporting replaces account schedules.

In order to make it easier for new users to get started with Business Central, Microsoft have renamed the account schedules capability Financial Reporting. They have also separated the definition of a financial report from that of the definition of rows and columns, so that it’s clearer that a financial report is a combination of row and column definitions plus additional parameters.

Enabled for: users, automatically
General Availability: October 2022

You can now search for Financial Reporting in the in-product search field as well as links from some Home pages.

lightbulb Tip

When you search for Account Schedules, you’ll see search results for Financial Reporting.

The link Financial Reporting will open a list of financial reports, and you can add user-defined reports to the list.

New Functionality In Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central 2022 Wave 2: Extended Text Functionality for VAT Clauses

The second of the new functionality in the application section is extended text functionality for VAT clauses.

Users can meet local requirements for long text on VAT clauses.

Enabled for: users, automatically
General Availability: October 2022

The extended text feature is implemented on VAT clauses, so that if a country requires a longer text, customers can enter the text as extended text. Users are also able to see the text printed in sales and purchase reports.

To set up extended text on a VAT clause, open the VAT Clauses page, choose the VAT clause that you want to add long text to, and then choose the Extended Texts action. On the Extended Text List page, specify the new extended text that you want to add to the VAT clause. You can also specify the sales or purchase documents on which you want to see the VAT clause with the extended text.

Exclude One Category From A Specific RSS Feed in ClassicPress

ClassicPressI recently had need of an RSS feed which included all posts in one category, but which excluded the posts in a sub category. In other RSS feeds I did want this category still included so I needed to be careful how I went about sorting out this feed.

I was expecting this not to be possible, but when I did some exploring I discovered that you could exclude post assigned to a specific category from a feed.

In the RSS feed URL, you can add ?cat=-{category number} where {category number} is the number of the category to be excluded.

This is the structure of the feed URL for a {named category} which excludes a specific {category number to exclude}:

https://www.azurecurve.co.uk/category/{named category}/feed/?cat=-{category number to exclude}

For example, if I wanted to use my ClassicPress feed, the feed URL would be:

https://www.azurecurve.co.uk/category/content-management-systems/classicpress/feed/

But if I wanted to exclude posts assigned the Plugins category, I would use this feed URL with a cat URL parameter:

https://www.azurecurve.co.uk/category/content-management-systems/classicpress/feed/?cat=-1089

Multiple categories to exclude can be specified in the URL parameters, separated with commas (e.g. ?cat=-10,-20).

Adventures With A Raspberry Pi: How to Update the OS on a Raspberry Pi

Raspberry PiThis post is part of the Adventures with a Raspberry Pi series.

Upgrading the OS on a raspberry Pi is recommended to be done one version at a time. Once you know exactly which version of Raspbian (or Raspberry Pi OS as newer versions are known), you will be able to determine the upgrade path you need to follow. I covered how to determine which OS version you have in the previous post in this series.

There is a version history page available on Wikipedia which shows the versions of the OS and the Raspberry Pi hardware on which it is supported. In my case I have a Raspberry Pi 3B+ which is running Raspbian 9 (Stretch) which means I have two upgrades of the OS to perform to get to the latest version.

There are several steps to go through to upgrade the OS. First we need to edit the sources.list file to update the distribution to which the Raspberry Pi is to be upgraded. Open this file by running the following command on the PI:

sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list

This will launch the editor:

sources.list in editor

New Functionality In Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central 2022 Wave 2: Better Bank Reconciliation for Checks and Improved Reporting

The first of the new functionality in the application section is better bank reconciliation for checks and improved reporting.

Bank reconciliation is a key task in every company and performing the task efficiently is important to every finance department. Better matching rules improve the speed with which bank reconciliation is done.

Enabled for: users, automatically
General Availability: October 2022

In bank reconciliation, there is now a match for check entries from the bank based on information from the check ledger. This gives a much higher degree of match confidence than only using information from the bank ledger. The matching rules are also made more clear, and more rules are added to increase matching success rates.

The test report has been changed so the G/L Account Balance field now shows the balance on the real G/L account at the statement ending balance date. This lets you easily detect direct postings to the G/L account. Direct posting to G/L accounts often leads to errors in bank reconciliation.

New Functionality In Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central 2022 Wave 2: Series Index

Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business CentralThis post is part of a series on the new functionality available in Wave 2 of Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central 2022. This release is the first with which I will be working since my move to Dynamics BC from Dynamics GP earlier this year.

In this series of posts, I am going to take a look at what is new with Business Central in this release wave. My understanding is the announced new functionality will become available between October and March so not all of it will be available immediately. When posting about some new functionality, I’ll try to indicate where something will be available in October or later.

I will also try to include some commentary on the new functionality being introduced.

I did many series like this on Microsoft Dynamics GP, but, as I say, this is my first on Dynamics BC; I’m happy to take feedback if there is a better approach I could take or if I have misunderstood something.

This series index, below (assuming you’re reading this on azurecurve | Ramblings of an IT Professional), will automatically update as each post in the series goes live, so make sure you bookmark this post so you can see keep up-to-date with this series.

In Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central (Administration), how do I… Understand the Role Center

Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business CentralThis post is part of the In Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central (Administration), how do I… series and of the wider In Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, how do I… series which I am posting as I familiarise myself with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central.

I’ve done a few posts so far in this series on Dynamics BC, but thought I’d take a step back to the basics and quickly cover the layout of the home page and how you can navigate around within Dynamics BC.

When you log into Dynamics BC, the first screen you will see is your Role Center (I’ve previously covered changing your role which automatically updates your Role Center); the role center is optimised based on a role-centric design to give you rapid access to the business process and intelligence tools which you need to perform your job.

Below is a screenshot of the Business Manager role center:

SQL View to Get Assembly BOM Items for Sales Transactions in Microsoft Dynamics GP

Microsoft Dynamics GPThis script was written for a client who uses Inventory BOMs in Microsoft Dynamics GP and wanted to be able to see all of the component items from those BOMs when they were looking at Sales Order transactions; this would give them some visibility of which component items were going to be needed from quotes or orders on the system.

They only use BOMs in a light way so this script doesn’t cater for BOMs which are inactive or contains inactive items; it wouldn’t be too difficult to update to include these, but the particular question would edit a BOM adding or removing items, rather than creating a new version of the BOM.

In Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, how do I… Hide the Teaching Tips

Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business CentralThis post is part of the In Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central (Administration), how do I… series and of the wider In Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, how do I… series which I am posting as I familiarise myself with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central.

Teaching tips are a standard part of Dynamics BC which displays a light blue popup box providing a link to the help and offering to allow the user to take a tour; these are perhaps useful to some people, but I rapidly got tired of them and looked for a way to disable them.

The screenshot, below, shows an example of the teaching tips on the Customers Card; to disable, click the Settings cog icon in the top right corer of the page and click on My Settings:
